چکیده

A new generation of intelligent applications can be enabled by broad-coverage repositories of knowledge. One emerging approach to constructing such repositories is proactive knowledge collection from large numbers of volunteer contributors. In this paper, we study the coverage and quality of a representative collection of part-of information contributed by volunteers. We analyze growth of coverage over time, redundancy of the collected knowledge, and the effect of the coverage and redundancy on the quality of the collection. We also present initial comparisons with collections created by ontology engineering and text extraction approaches. Our analysis reveals that redundancy of contribution helps identify high quality statements, but that some of the statements also have overly high redundancy, drawing contributor effort away from areas where they are needed more. We suggest possible ways to address these issues in future collection

Understanding and Supporting Volunteer Contributors: The Case of Metadata and Document Servers

The semantic interpretation of text remains a hard AI problem, and it becomes particularly relevant when large archives have to be built and searched. To aid in this process, advanced Webbased publication services (that is, document servers with surrounding infrastructure) adapt methods from traditional archiving, employing bibliographic metadata to improve data quality. However, most services ...

Voluntary Contributions of Unaware Internet Users? On Automatic Knowledge Retrieval from the WWW

This paper presents the method of automatic knowledge retrieval from the Web. In this approach, millions of Internet users who naturally and constantly create and update the content of the Web are treated as the “voluntary contributors” who provide knowledge concepts without any need for additional motivation or coordination of their efforts. Obviously, only a small part of the statements acces...

Knowledge Begets Knowledge: Steps towards Assisted Knowledge Acquisition in Cyc

The Cyc project is predicated on the idea that, in order to be effective and flexible, computer software must have an understanding of the context in which its tasks are performed. We believe this context is what is known informally as “common sense.” Over the last twenty years, sufficient common sense knowledge has been entered into Cyc to allow it to more effectively and flexibly support an i...
